“Everything is nothing with a twist.” --Kurt Vonnegut Nothing. I walked for a couple of hours, camera in hand, and shot nothing worth processing - much less sharing with the world. Blah. Time to go home. Then on the way back, along the side of the street, I saw this twisty little vine holding on tight to a twisted metal guide wire. And it was the perfect shot for today. Why? To me, it embodies one thing every artist needs to know. When you feel you’ve lost your way creatively, nothing works, the lightbulb is off, the fount has run dry (insert more clichés here), keep working! Keep doing what you do, but try to look at things with a different perspective. Try new techniques. Experiment. Take a break and come back with fresh eyes. Close your eyes. Open your eyes. Borrow someone else’s eyes. Wear different shoes. With no socks. Stand on your head. Stand on one foot. But keep at it. With a twist, you can make something out of nothing. This fire hydrant, long out of service, is all that remains on the site of an industrial complex along the river in Milwaukee's East Side neighborhood. The warehouse that stood empty and decaying for years on this spot, was torn down last year and the land reclaimed as parkland. It is now part of the Urban Ecology Center. 37/365 Copyright 2015 Scott Norris Photography www.scottnorrisphotography.com
